THE BAY OF ISLANDS

The fishing grounds in the Bay of Islands are very close to the two major ports of Russell and Paihia, and on a fast modern boat like Major Tom II, with a top speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots, marlin waters can be reached within 30 minutes.

A 40 minute flight from Auckland International Airport (or a 3 hour drive) brings you to some of the best fishing grounds in the world. The Bay of Islands irregular coastline embraces 150 islands and is steeped in historical assocation with NZ's early settlement. Russell was the first Capital of NZ, and home to the second oldest gamefishing club in the world. The walls of the Russell Swordfish Club are filled with the artefacts, photos and fish of some of the world's fishing legends.

A wide range of accommodation is available, with Geoff only too happy to help arrange bookings for suitable facilities.

Activities that visitors can enjoy in the Bay of Islands:

Few visitors depart the Bay of Islands and Russell in particular without a lasting impression of the place, and the people. The regions temperate marine climate is near perfect. The locals are friendly and outging. The list of things to do is endless: your stay can have all the ingredients for being as action packed or relaxing as you desire.

The region is a renowned cruising ground and all manner of Boat Trips are available for visitors to explore, picnic, swim, and enjoy the paradise of sandy beaches and bays of this Maritime Park.

Daily trips to the famous "Hole in the Rock" or a leisurely cruise on the famous Cream Trip both allow time for Island stop-overs.

SAILING is an alternative way to see the Bay. Half day, whole day or evening Sunset Cruises are easily arranged and it is your choice whether to participate or lay back and relax.

FISHING is a year round activity. American writer Zane Grey named it his Anglers Eldorado. The Bay of Islands is the home of Big Game Fishing in New Zealand. The fleet of Big Game fishing boats work out of Russell and Paihia during the Big Game Fishing Season (December till late April). Light Tackle Fishing for Snapper, Kingfish and Kahawai is a pleasure on the superbly designed Major Tom II, or catch your own off the local wharf or rocky seashore.

DOLPHINS; Either swimming with or watching from arms length is a memorable experience for all ages. These trips are very popular and advance bookings are required.

KAYAKS, CANOES & BIKE HIRE: are available for hire at hourly or daily rates. Join a group or hire one individually.

DIVING & SNORKELLING TRIPS: Depart the wharf at Paihia or Russell to head to the very best spots in the Bay. Trips to dive the wreck of the "Rainbow Warrior" operate twice weekly during the summer months.

GOLF: The 18 hole International Course is located across the Bay from Russell at Waitangi. An often heard comment: "How can you play golf with such magnificent views?" Clubs and Carts are available for hire.

HORSE TREKS: Roaming scenic Bush Tracks and Seashores. Safe and experienced Horses and guides to suit all levels of Riding Skills.

The Waitangi National Reserve commands spectacular views across the Harbour. This is where the Maori chiefs ceded Sovereignty to the British Monarchy in 1840. The Treaty House is now a Museum and the Grounds of the Reserve with its Maori Cultural Centre is open to Visitors Year Round. The 18 Hole Golf Course is also sited on this reserve.

The area is a base for a variety of land-based trips. One hour scenic and historic trips of Russell run 4 times daily and give a personal insight into NZ's earliest European history. Day trips into the majestic Kauri forests on the West Coast, and to the far most northern tip of NZ where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea.

Geoff is happy to advise and arrange for any of these activities and help organise your accommodation.
